December 2025 Update

As we draw near to the end of another year—and closer to the joy of Christmas Day—we find ourselves once again in the season of Advent. Advent is a season of waiting, but not the anxious, clock-watching kind. It’s a deep, hopeful waiting that leans forward, anticipating the light that God has promised.

The prophet Isaiah wrote: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Advent is God’s assurance that the darkness is not the end of the story. Even before the light dawned, God announced it. Even before the manger, hope was already on its way.

As we look back over this year, we all carry mixed memories—moments of joy and celebration, alongside disappointments, weariness, or unanswered questions. And yet Advent reminds us that God steps into real life, not the polished, perfect version we wish we had. Jesus arrived in the middle of political tension, poverty, obscurity, and the chaos of a busy Bethlehem. God is not deterred by the dark—He enters it.

4 invitations for us this Advent:

1. Pause and Pay Attention

Before the rush of the final days toward Christmas, take a moment to breathe. Notice where you’ve seen God’s faithfulness this year. His fingerprints are often found in the quiet, ordinary places. Advent teaches us to slow down long enough to see Him. Join in with the Advent Devotions (See below).

2. Welcome Christ’s Light—Again

Advent isn’t only about remembering Christ’s first coming, but renewing our openness to His coming today. Where do you need His peace? His wisdom? His joy? Invite Him into the corners of your life you’d prefer to tidy up first. He comes anyway.

3. Carry Hope into the New Year

The same light that broke into Bethlehem now shines in us. As we step into 2026, we don’t go carrying our own fragile strength—we go carrying the hope of Christ. And hope is never passive. Hope prays. Hope serves. Hope forgives. Hope keeps moving.

4. Invite People to Join us this Christmas

We have a whole bunch of Christmas gatherings we can invite people to. How about the Christingle (7 Dec 10am St. Luke’s), Beer and Carols (7 Dec 6pm the Coach House pub), Maidstone Carols (13 Dec 4pm & 7pm All Saints Maidstone), Family Nativity (24 Dec 4pm) or our Christmas Day Celebration (10am St. Luke’s). Please pray and invite people to come and hear the wonderful message of Jesus Christ saviour of the world.

As a church family, may we head toward Christmas Day with hearts lifted, eyes open, and hands ready to receive again the most extraordinary gift: “Immanuel—God with us.” And may His light guide us faithfully into the year ahead.

Peace and Joy to you this Advent,

Gareth

Advent Prayer

Lord Jesus,

As we draw near to Christmas, open our hearts again to the wonder of Your coming.

Where we are weary, bring Your rest.

Where we are anxious, bring Your peace.

Where we feel the weight of the year, bring Your renewing hope.

Thank You that You step into our world—not from a distance, but as Immanuel, God with us.

Guide us with Your light as we finish this year and step into the next.

Make us people of hope, joy, and love, carrying Your presence wherever we go.

Amen.
